Species list

All species names conform to Bolton (1995, 2003) supplemented by more recent work referenced on the appropriate genus page. The names of ants that I could match to published species are cited italicized and accompanied by the author of the name and year of description. All other “species” are morphospecies. Morphospecies are based on a set of specimens that are morphologically similar enough to be considered belonging to the same species. These morphospecies bear provisional names (i.e. are not published and should not be viewed as “available”) that consist of a species code (e.g. JHB03) followed by author name and “ms.”. These are not necessarily new species and might be identified as published species in the future. Furthermore the delimitations of morphospecies are in constant change as new specimens become available and enlarge the knowledge about the species` variation. They should not be treated with the same authority as published species in the taxonomic literature.
